Just five days after launch, Slay the Spire 2 has already taken over Steam with Overwhelmingly Positive reviews (97% from more than 16,000 players). The long-awaited sequel from MegaCrit dropped into Early Access on March 5, 2026, and the internet can’t stop talking about it. Reddit is flooded with “this is already better than the original” posts, X (Twitter) is full of 9/10 scores and co-op screenshots, and critics are calling the new multiplayer mode an “early GOTY contender.”
The Spire is back, bigger and meaner after sleeping for a thousand years. You still pick a character, fight through floors, grab relics, dodge events, and try to reach the top. But MegaCrit added a light story layer with timeline fragments that unlock little bits of lore about the Spire and its old residents. Nothing heavy, but it makes runs feel more meaningful.
Combat is still turn-based card goodness, but they cleaned it up a lot. Animations are snappier, there are way fewer filler cards, and the new “Enchantments” system lets you slap extra effects onto your cards. I’m already cooking up stupid poison + doom combos that never would’ve worked in the first game.
The Characters

You get five playable characters at Early Access launch: Three returning heroes (Ironclad, The Silent, and others feel stronger than ever, “Ironclad is a Super Saiyan now,” as one X user joked). Two completely new characters with fresh mechanics and backstories.
One standout new class is The Necrobinder, who plays with doom, curses, and summoning-style effects. Players are already theory-crafting insane poison + doom combos in co-op. Each character has unique cards, motives, and secret unlocks. Unlocking new ones feels rewarding and ties into the lore fragments.
Graphics, Sound & Performance
- Visuals: Stunning upgrade. New art style, gorgeous animations, detailed environments, and the little character sprites are adorable (the Regent’s throne carriers already have plushie requests on X).
- Sound: Same excellent soundtrack vibe, with new tracks that fit the evolved Spire perfectly.
- Performance: Insanely lightweight. Runs at 60+ FPS on almost anything. Official minimum specs are basically a potato PC (dual-core CPU, 4 GB RAM, integrated graphics). No issues reported on Steam even on older hardware.
System Requirements
Minimum (plays great on low-end PCs):
- OS: Windows 10 / macOS 11 / Ubuntu 20.04
- CPU: Dual-core 2.0 GHz
- RAM: 4 GB
- GPU: Any DirectX 12 / Metal / Vulkan compatible with 1 GB VRAM
- Storage: 4 GB SSD
Recommended: Quad-core + 8 GB RAM for buttery smooth 4-player co-op.
Characters & New Stuff

You start with the three classics (Ironclad feels like a total beast now) plus two brand-new characters. The Necrobinder is my favorite so far — super fun if you like curses and summoning vibes. Each one has fresh mechanics and secret unlocks that tie into the new lore. It keeps the “just one more run” hook alive.
The Big New Thing
This is the part everyone is losing their minds over, and honestly? It rules. Up to four of you can climb together online. Everyone plays cards at the same time, enemies scale with the group, and there are special team-synergy cards. One friend tanks while another stacks vuln and I spam poison — it gets hilarious and surprisingly strategic.
You can revive downed teammates at rest sites, and the chaos never feels unfair. I played a 4-hour session with buddies last night and we were all yelling at the screen. Reddit is full of people saying the same thing: “Co-op is smoother than I expected and somehow makes the game even more replayable.”
The Small Stuff That Bugs Me (Early Access Things)
It’s still Early Access, so yeah, some balance is off. A couple cards feel way too strong, and one boss fight needs tuning. There’s no final ending yet, and the full campaign isn’t complete. But the devs are already dropping patches and listening to feedback — they even added an in-game suggestion button.
Price is fair at $24.99 (it’ll go up at full launch). If you’re on the fence, just know the game already has more content and polish than a lot of 1.0 releases.
What People Are Saying Online
I checked Reddit’s r/slaythespire and it’s blowing up. Top posts are all “Already better than the first game” and “Co-op is the best thing to happen to deckbuilders.” On X, trending clips of insane co-op runs and funny deaths are everywhere. Most people who bought it early are saying the same thing I am: buy it now, don’t wait for 1.0.
Should You Buy It?
If you loved Slay the Spire 1, this is an easy yes. It’s the same addictive loop but better in almost every way, plus that killer co-op mode. If you’ve never played the original, this is actually a great starting point because the tutorials are clearer and co-op makes learning fun.
I’m giving it a solid 9/10 in Early Access. It’s already one of my favorite games of 2026, and it’s only going to get better. The Spire is calling — you picking up or what?
